Whitsunday tourism identity to spread summer safety message

Respected Whitsunday tourism operator Suzette Pelt has been selected as a leading voice to spread the water safety message this summer, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said today.

Ms Boyle said Ms Pelt, of Whitsunday Yacht Charters, had been chosen as one of five high-profile tourism ambassadors under a Visitor Safety Program launched to help keep visitors safe in Queensland’s waterways this season.

Ms Pelt was officially inducted as a Safety Ambassador at a ceremony in Brisbane today.
“Ms Pelt is highly respected within the industry and will make an ideal ambassador to work with other tourism operators to promote safety messages this summer,” Ms Boyle said.

“As someone who works in the yacht charter industry, she has an excellent knowledge of what people need to do to keep safe, whether travelling on the water or relaxing in it.

Ms Pelt will work with other tourism operators to ensure messages about boating safety and the use of stinger safety suits are promoted.

“It is important that safety information is displayed prominently and that operators personally delivery safety messages to visitors at every opportunity,” Ms Boyle said.

Ms Boyle, who is the state’s first Visitor Safety Ambassador, said Ms Pelt joined four other highly regarded industry figures in the program.

“Our other ambassadors include Dreamworld’s Stephen Gregg, Tadashi Echikawa of Japan Tourism Gold Coast and JTB Australia, as well as Tropical North Queensland’s Tony Baker from the Quicksilver Group and Max Shepherd from Skyrail,” she said.

“Our state is already enjoying its first flush of visitors for the summer which is our busiest period for both domestic and international tourists.

“Queensland - and Australia more generally - already has an excellent international reputation for visitor safety.

“It’s important we safeguard this reputation and ensure visitors to Queensland have both a fantastic stay and a safe one.”

The Visitor Safety Program is a joint initiative of Tourism Queensland, Surf Life Saving Queensland and the Queensland Tourism Industry Council.
