Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Second transformer delivered for Wide Bay area

A second 155-tonne high voltage transformer has been delivered to the Wide Bay region today (19 December 2007), to bolster electricity supplies to the growing region, Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said.

Mr Wilson said Powerlink Queensland delivered the transformer to its Teebar Creek Substation currently being built near Glenbar, south west of Maryborough.

The 155-tonne transformer follows the delivery of a similar transformer earlier this year and forms part of a $41 million project that will reinforce electricity supply to Bundaberg, Maryborough, Hervey Bay and the rural areas surrounding Childers and Gayndah.

“Population growth and industrial developments are driving increasing demand for electricity in the Wide Bay area,” Mr Wilson said.

“Peak electricity demand in the area has increased by 4.5% per year over the past five years and will continue to increase by 2.5% per year over the next five years.

“The new Teebar Creek Substation is essential infrastructure that will increase the capacity of the high voltage electricity network in the area to meet this demand.”

Member for Hervey Bay Andrew McNamara said the second transformer would provide a much-needed further boost to the region’s electricity supply.

“More and more people are choosing to live and work in our wonderful Wide Bay region. They will benefit from a more secure and reliable electricity supply which will serve them for many years to come,” Mr McNamara said.

Powerlink Chief Executive, Gordon Jardine said work commenced on the new Teebar Creek Substation earlier this year and was expected to be completed in early 2008.

“The new transformers will convert high voltage electricity from Powerlink’s transmission network down to a lower voltage suitable for Ergon Energy’s distribution network

“The final size of the second $4 million transformer once installed will be 22 metres long, five metres wide and eight metres high.”

The new transformer left Brisbane on Sunday (16 December) being carried by two prime movers on a flat-bed trailer.

Powerlink undertook logistical planning and consultation with local and state authorities to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of the transformer and to minimise any impact on traffic.
