Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Get your taste-buds jumping this Christmas with goodies produced in the Mackay-Whitsundays region
The Mackay-Whitsunday region abounds with top quality locally-produced food and wine – perfect for Christmas lunch or to take a plate while visiting family and friends.
Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle is urging Queenslanders to support our local producers and choose Queensland-made food and wine this Christmas.
“Queenslanders need look no further than their own backyard to find everything they need to indulge their family and friends – and themselves – this Christmas,” Ms Boyle said.
“Queensland-produced food and wine is among the best in the world.
“Although Queensland has traditionally been known for its meat products and sugar, our value-added foods are rapidly gaining a worldwide reputation for quality.
The Queensland Government helps local businesses to promote their products and grow their businesses through workshops, grants and by helping them to showcase their products at exhibitions.
The Mackay Centre - Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry has worked with a number of local business owners and operators to help them grow their operations, including:
o CQ Barra supplies local restaurants and its products are also available at the Saturday town markets. The secret to their great taste is that they are finished in salt water before sale and processing.
o Whitsunday Gold Coffee produce a rich coffee with intense aroma. Check out their offer at www.whitsundaygold.com
o Rainbow Orchards, growers and exporters of lychees, are located south of Mackay and benefit form an idyllic costal location and tropical climate. They supply to local markets during the summer months, just in time for Christmas.
o A visit to the Sarina Sugar Shed is a must not only for the mini sugar mill tour, but also for their regionally inspired fruity boutique spirits, confectionary and condiments.
