Rocky scores another ‘first’: Minister
A tertiary scholarship program for South Sea Islanders is about to reach another milestone, with Rocky getting set to welcome its first local graduate.
Communities and Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today praised Simone Warkill for completing her Central Queensland University degree, thanks to hard work and the support of a South Sea Islander Community Foundation Scholarship.
“The foundation has provided 20 scholarships to Australian South Sea Islander students to help them achieve their undergraduate university dreams,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Simone Warkill from Rockhampton will officially graduate in March 2008, joining three other Queenslanders who have graduated through the scholarship program.”
Scholarships are awarded to eligible students through the University of the Sunshine Coast, James Cook University and Central Queensland University.
Ms Nelson-Carr said the Queensland Government provided $150,000 in 2001 to establish the perpetual fund and finance the tertiary scholarships.
“CSR Sugar has committed $30,000 to the foundation over six years, while the Queensland Department of Emergency Services has committed $15,000 over three years.
“Other generous contributors to the fund include Dick Smith Foods, Consolidated Rutile, Minter Ellison and Smec Holdings and the Townsville and Bundaberg City councils. Thank you to all.”
Ms Warkill completed her double degree with a Bachelor of Business majoring in Human Resources and Marketing, and a Bachelor of Professional Communications majoring in Public Relations and Cultural Media from CQU in Rockhampton.
Ms Warkill said the foundation provided her with personal, financial and networking support.
“Going to uni was a huge change for me, it was such a new and unknown environment,” she said.
“They really made me feel like I wasn’t doing this alone.”
The Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation is a trust fund established by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Community Foundation.
