Homes and businesses in the rapidly-growing Coomera, Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island areas will benefit from the recent completion of an $820,000 upgrade to the local electricity network.

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said around 1.3km of new underground power cables would be laid between Hope Island/Sanctuary Cove and Coomera Waters.

“The work also includes a new 11,000 volt power cable under the Coomera River. All the work is expected to be completed in the next few weeks,” Mr Wilson said.

“The new cables will boost capacity to the local power network to cater for future growth in the Coomera-Hope Island area,” Mr Wilson said.

“Energex technicians will have more switching options to restore power faster after unexpected damage to the network caused by storms, wild weather, vehicles hitting power poles or underground cables being accidentally damaged.”

Member for Broadwater, Peta-Kaye Croft said the upgrade would benefit local homes and businesses.

“We’ve experienced high levels of growth in the past few years. This upgrade will help meet our future power needs,” Ms Croft said.

“Our region is one of Energex’s fastest growth areas, and in the past three years the company has spent more than $330 million upgrading the region’s electricity network,” she said.

The project is part of a record $4 billion-plus, five-year capital expenditure program currently being undertaken by Energex.

This financial year Energex is investing more than $800 million on upgrades to its electricity network.

A further $300 million has been set aside to maintain and operate the network – that’s an overall average of more than $3 million a day.
