Premier
The Honourable Anna Bligh

“Clem Jones was the father of modern Brisbane.

His life-long civic contribution and love of the city of Brisbane was unsurpassed.

Clem will long be remembered for his vision and commitment to transforming Brisbane from a conservative country town to a vibrant and cosmopolitan city.

His extraordinary achievements as Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 1961 to 1975 are well documented and his tireless civic service continued long after he left politics - there are many wonderful community organisations that will long be a part of his great legacy.

His vision and enthusiasm for Queensland made him a commanding force in projects including the Constitutional Convention, the Western Queensland Flood Appeal, Foodbank, aged and disabled persons care and youth centres.

His amazing achievements were repeatedly recognised through state and national accolades including the Order of Australia (1976), the Advance Australia Award for contribution to sport and the community (1982), Queenslander of the Year (1990), and he received the Keys to the City of Brisbane in 1998.

Clem was also recognised as a Queensland Great in 2002.

He will be greatly missed by the Brisbane community, particularly his local area in Eastern Brisbane, but his legacy will live on.

My thoughts and prayers go out today to Clem’s friends and family.”

A State Funeral will be held for Clem Jones later this week and in honour of his wishes – will be held at City Hall.
