The Honourable Judy Spence
Top juniors ready to swing into action for Greg Norman Junior Masters
Australia’s leading junior golfers will converge on the Coolangatta-Tweed Heads Golf Club this weekend, for the 17th annual Greg Norman Junior Masters.
Sport Minister Judy Spence said the event, which is widely recognised as one of the premier junior tournaments in Australasia, is set to attract a quality, invitation-only field of more than 220 competitors.
“The Greg Norman Junior Masters is one of the premier tournaments on the national junior calendar and boasts a past winner’s list featuring players of the calibre of Karrie Webb and Adam Scott,” Ms Spence said.
“The tournament is now in its 17th year, which is a tremendous achievement by the Greg Norman Golf Foundation.
“Over the past seven years we have provided more than $1.35 million to support the Greg Norman Golf Foundation, to ensure our young golfers have every chance of reaching their goals and enjoying participation in sport.”
State Member for Burleigh, Christine Smith, who will officially open the event on Sunday, said the event is one of the highlights on the region’s junior sporting calendar.
“I’m expecting to witness a very competitive tournament this year, with golfers aspiring to follow in the footsteps of Greg Norman – one of the most successful Australian golfers in history,” Ms Smith said.
“It’s fitting that a tournament carrying the name of Australia’s greatest-ever golfer continues to provide opportunities for aspiring young golfers to compete with some of the best players across Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
“We have 170 Queensland youths participating this year, and I have no doubt they will perform outstandingly.”
Ms Spence said the Bligh Government continues to support the development of golf in Queensland.
“Since 1998, this Government has injected more than $9.3 million into the sport of golf in this state,” Ms Spence said.
“We are a strong supporter of sport, from the grass roots levels through to the elite, as we are committed to providing opportunities for all Queenslanders to get active.”
