Brisbanites and business visitors boost Sunshine Coast coffers
The Sunshine Coast is proving irresistible to Brisbane holidaymakers and Australian business tourists, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle announced today.
Ms Boyle said just over three million domestic overnight visitors were drawn to the Sunshine Coast – an increase of 12 per cent – in the year ended September 2007, the latest National Visitor Survey results showed.
“At the same time, the amount of nights domestic visitors spent on the Sunshine Coast increased by 8 per cent, to 11.7 million. Total visitor expenditure increased by 18 per cent to 2.7 billion,” she said.
“Of the three million domestic overnight visitors, 1.8 million (60 per cent) were holiday visitors – up 12 per cent on the past year.
“Domestic holiday nights spent in the Sunshine Coast region increased to 8.2 million – up 16 per cent on the previous year.”
Ms Boyle said 1.35 million Queenslanders accounted for 73 per cent of the Sunshine Coast’s domestic holiday market – and visitors increased by 20 per cent compared with the previous year.
“It is great to see so many Queenslanders taking a holiday in their own backyard,” she said.
“This jump in intrastate visitors is almost entirely due to the rise in the number of people on holiday from Brisbane.
“This increase is testament to the hard work of the local tourism operators - in partnership with Tourism Sunshine Coast and Tourism Queensland – who have ensured the Sunshine Coast remains a leading holiday destination in a local market spoilt for choice.”
Ms Boyle said domestic overnight business visitors to the Sunshine Coast region increased by 30 per cent to 198,000 and domestic overnight business visitor nights by 5 per cent to 400,900 nights.
The latest figures show the average spend per person per night increased by 7 per cent to $154 and the average total spend per person increased by 3 per cent to $602.
Brisbane residents visiting friends and relatives were largely responsible for a 14 per cent increase in the visiting friends and relatives segment.
