Tourism pure gold in Central Queensland

Central Queensland is celebrating a tourism bonanza, with an $88 million increase in domestic visitor expenditure, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle announced today.

Ms Boyle said the latest National Visitor Survey results showed the number of holiday tourists, people visiting friends and relatives and business travellers all increased sharply during the year to September 2007.

“Visitors to the region spent a massive $573 million in the past year,” Ms Boyle said.

“These are absolutely terrific results for Central Queensland – how good is that?!

“Central Queensland Tourism is working incredibly hard to attract tourists to this dynamic region and I applaud their efforts.

“Central Queensland attracted 1,167,300 domestic overnight visitors – up 27 per cent – who spent 4,060,800 visitor nights in the region – up 35 per cent.

“Queenslanders from all around the State continue to head to Central Queensland with the number of visitors from the Sunshine State increasing by 31 per cent to 987,100.

“At the same time, the number of interstate visitors increased by 7 per cent to 180,200.

“Visitors to Central Queensland spent on average 3.5 nights and $126 per night. The average spend per person was $470.

“In the year to September 2007, the Central Queensland region received 428,000 holiday visitors - up 30 per cent on the past year.

“The average length of stay for holiday visitors to the Central Queensland region increased to 3.7 nights – up from 2.9 nights.

“Intrastate holiday visitors to Central Queensland accounted for 81 per cent of the holiday market with the sector increasing by 31 per cent to 348,300.

“People visiting friends and relatives also increased by 18 per cent to 323,100 on the previous year.”

Ms Boyle said domestic overnight business visitors increased by 61 per cent to 354,300 in the year to September 2007.

Domestic business nights spent within the Central Queensland region increased by 60 per cent to 1,030,000.
