New traffic signals light up in time for Christmas

There will be fewer delays for motorists on Hervey Bay’s Boat Harbour Drive, over the busy Christmas and New Year period with a new set of traffic signals to be switched on tomorrow morning (7am, 14 December).

Minister for Main Roads Warren Pitt today said the $1.7 million intersection upgrade would bring fewer delays and better traffic flow for motorists getting on to the major thoroughfare from Hervey Bay's major shopping centres.

“Boat Harbour Drive is the busiest road in Hervey Bay with about 17,000 vehicles using the road each day," Mr Pitt said.

“Combine this with the number of shops and businesses in the Central Avenue area and the result has often meant delays for motorists exiting from Central Avenue or O'Rourke Street on to Boat Harbour Drive.

“The upgrade was brought forward by four months to ensure the safety of road users is maintained.

Mr Pitt said the new traffic signals had replaced a roundabout built more than 10 years ago before the sea-change phenomenon hit Hervey Bay, significantly increasing population and tourism in the region.

"The new set of lights also come with separate turning lanes for all traffic and a safer crossing for pedestrians.

“Safety is our primary concern, so I'm pleased the new pedestrian crossings at the traffic signals will make it safer for pedestrians to access the shopping precinct."

“Main Roads extends its thanks to motorists and local residents for their patience during the upgrade, and to the crews who worked at night to reduce the impact on local road users and businesses in the area,” Mr Pitt said.
