Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
SUNSHINE COAST BUSINESSES WELCOME JOB READY GRADUATES
Twenty-six Skilling Queenslanders for Work project participants from the Sunshine Coast will graduate tomorrow with job-ready skills in retail, hospitality or medical administration.
The graduates are one of three groups participating in the Back to Work project which is being run by CADET Training and Employment thanks to a $367,300 grant.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said Back to Work has been a valuable project welcomed by participants and the Caloundra community.
“This project has given participants the skills to make it easier for them to share in the spoils of our strong economy and help it continue to grow,” Mr Mickel said.
“The group, consisting of parents, carers, long-term unemployed and young people, have had practical training through work experience with local businesses and hands-on practice using specialised medical centre software for those who undertook medical administration training.”
Sunshine Coast Senior Training Manager De-anne Richards said the project graduates were of a high standard and are likely to secure work in the near future.
“There has been great success with the retail work experience with Spotlight, Target and Big W and there is a good prospect for the retail trained participants to gain work with these companies,” Mrs Richards said.
“This was the first year we have used PAX software as part of the training. PAX is a program used widely by medical receptions and was highly beneficial for giving participants relevant skills for work in the industry.
“One particular young woman has been very enthusiastic during her experience working in a local chemist and it is likely she will secure paid work post-graduation.”
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and Queensland’s prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
