Climate under pressure

The third installment of the State Government’s $2.5 million ClimateSmart Living campaign to raise community awareness of climate change ‘Climate Under Pressure’, will soon be launched in Brisbane.

Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation Andrew McNamara said that motorists would be encouraged to pump up their tyres to reduce fuel and resource waste.

“This campaign will follow the outstanding success of ‘Cool it by Degrees’ and ‘Change a Light Bulb’ day,” Mr McNamara said.

The ‘Cool it by Degrees’ day resulted in more than 23,000 Queensland households saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions thanks to their simple decision to check and adjust their fridge temperature.

Fridge thermometers were distributed throughout Queensland to encourage householders to check their fridges on November 16 – ‘Cool it by Degrees Day’.

Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation Andrew McNamara said the thermometers would help Queenslanders make sure they had set their fridges to four degrees Celsius.

“Households using thermometers to check their fridge temperatures reduce their fridge’s energy consumption by making sure they are not over-chilled but are still safe for food storage,” Mr McNamara said.

“I applaud every Queenslander who took the pledge to check their fridge temperature for Cool it by Degrees Day, as simple actions like these can make the world of difference,” he said.

“Actions taken by people who have participated in the ClimateSmart campaign have the potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 4,540 tonnes a year, the equivalent of planting around 22,700 trees,” Mr McNamara said.

Partnering with business is helping make the ClimateSmart Living campaign a success.

Mr McNamara said it was fantastic to receive the support of The Good Guys, Retravision, Westfield Shopping Centres and Bunnings Warehouses in promoting Cool it by Degrees.

“I am very pleased to see these companies participating in the ClimateSmart Living campaign and helping educate people on the importance of simple but effective actions,” he said.

“It’s important to recognise that business is part of the solution to climate change.”
