Tank Street Bridge Construction Underway

Brisbane locals and tourists alike will be walking on the new $63.3 million Tank Street Bridge within two years, Premier Anna Bligh said today when she attended the ceremonial sod turning today.

Ms Bligh said Baulderstone Hornibrook Pty Ltd had hit the ground running since it was named successful contractor in October, with site works underway over last two months.

“Today marks another important milestone for the Tank Street Bridge, with construction work ramping up as of today,” Ms Bligh said.

“Baulderstone Hornibrook are making the architecturally striking design a reality and, in the process, delivering a piece of infrastructure that will add to the pedestrian-friendliness of the ever-growing Brisbane city.

“The project will provide an essential link from Roma Street Parkland, the Brisbane Magistrates Courts and new Supreme Courts and District Courts projects to the Queensland Cultural Centre and South Bank,” she said.

Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten, who joined with the Premier to turn the first sod, said the bridge will feature viewing and relaxation platforms, two rest areas and a continuous all-weather canopy for the entire length of the bridge.

“It will also complete a pedestrian and cycle loop linking the city and South Bank via the Goodwill Bridge,” he said.

Ms Bligh said she was confident the new bridge would prove just as popular as the Goodwill Bridge, which is currently used by more than 53,000 people every week.

The Premier announced in October that the Government would hold a public naming competition for the bridge before it was opened.
