Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Reduced speed limit for Bundaberg intersection
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt today announced the introduction of a reduced speed limit and installation of a stop sign at the Elliott Heads Road and Innes Park Road intersection in Bundaberg.
Mr Pitt said while the Main Roads Department considered the current road conditions and speed limit safe, it did recognise there were ongoing community concerns.
"Independent investigations and audits of this intersection have not identified any potential road environment hazards and have found the 100kmh speed limit is in line with current safety standards," Mr Pitt said.
"However, we are conscious that there has been a number of crashes at this intersection and in response to this it has been decided to make changes," Mr Pitt said.
"This decision follows careful consideration of the crash history at this intersection, as well as the results of the recent safety audit."
Mr Pitt said Main Roads would reduce the speed limit from 100kmh to 80kmh through the intersection zone and the curved approaches – extending back towards Bundaberg to include the Hummock Road intersection – as soon as possible.
The give way sign at the Innes Park Road approach will would be replaced with a stop sign.
Mr Pitt said the surest way to reduce crashes at the location was for motorists to follow the road signage and take the prevailing traffic conditions into account.
"To minimise crashes caused by driver error, it is important that motorists take care in their assessment of distance and whether a vehicle may actually be approaching the intersection more quickly than they think."
Mr Pitt said Main Roads would also continue to keep the area clear of vegetation to assist with visibility, and improve the delineation of the road to enhance drivers’ awareness of the applicable road rules.
"Additionally we will continue to work with Burnett Shire Council regarding the potential closure of School Lane at this intersection to minimise potential conflict points.
"Main Roads will also continue to monitor the crash history at this intersection to assess whether any further changes are required."
