Clayfield jockey Danny Philpot and the Toombul Indoor Cricket Group have joined 10 other Queenslanders chosen to share their remarkable life stories in the 2008 Share Your Story calendar.

Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today launched the annual calendar which encourages Queenslanders to see beyond a person’s disability and instead focus on their ability.

“The calendar has provided inspiration to Queenslanders for several years - and the 2008 release is no exception,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Others featured in this year’s calendar include a young woman who does not let Down syndrome keep her back from a promising career, a woman who overcame her fears and parachuted from a plane despite her spinal muscular atrophy and a young student who is changing perceptions about disability at her school.

“This is a truly extraordinary collection of stories from Queenslanders who are sharing not only their experience of living with a disability, but their triumphs and achievements as well,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

A serious racing fall and subsequent brain injury altered the course of Danny Philpot’s life as a professional jockey.

Working from his wheelchair, Danny has established his own business, Brisbane Race Day Tours, so he could continue his love for horses and the industry.

“The tours introduce people to the track, jockeys, stables and races at tracks around Brisbane,” Danny said.

The spirit among the Toombul Indoor Cricket Group is strong as they share and care for each other, while playing a sport that they love.

Concentrating on strengths and abilities, the team strive for excellence and are very proud of their accomplishments, including its members who represented Queensland in state play-offs.

“When we see how individuals and families cope with circumstances many of us cannot imagine, we get a compelling picture of human resilience and courage,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the public gained a compelling picture of human resilience and courage by seeing how Queenslanders such as Danny coped with their individual circumstances.

“By sharing these stories, we are encouraging people to open their eyes, hearts and minds to see beyond the disability, and in doing so, help build a more inclusive society.”

The Share Your Story calendar is free and available from ABC retail shops and Disability Services Queensland regional offices.
