Andy Warhol retrospective opens at GoMA

Premier Anna Bligh will tonight officially open Australia’s first major Andy Warhol retrospective at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).

The Premier said the exhibition, from 8 December to 30 March 2008, would be the highlight of this summer’s arts program in Australia.

“Andy Warhol features more than 300 art works by one of the world’s most influential late 20th century artists, with many works showing for the first time in Australia,” the Premier said.

“Amongst the paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, photographs, films and installation works in the exhibition are Warhol’s famous celebrity portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Onassis and Elvis Presley.

“The Gallery’s Australian Cinémathèque will present one of the largest and most complete surveys of Warhol’s films. There will also be a children’s program in The Silver Factory at the Children’s Art Centre at GoMA.

“Exclusive to Brisbane, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the extraordinary breadth of Warhol’s career.

“It’s a fitting way to mark the first anniversary of GoMA – which Queenslanders have made their own since it opened its doors on December 1 last year – with more than half a million people visiting,” Ms Bligh said.

Acting Arts Minister Margaret Keech said GoMA was uniquely placed to host Andy Warhol.

“Our Government’s $291 million redevelopment of the Cultural Centre has made an exhibition like this possible,” Mrs Keech said.

“Since the re-opening in December last year, the Cultural Centre has recorded more than 3 million visits.”

Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said the Gallery secured more than $1.5 million in sponsorship for Andy Warhol, with Queensland Events Corporation and Santos Ltd as Principal Partners.

“Without such support, and the Queensland Government’s indemnification of the exhibition, the Gallery would not be able to present exhibitions of such scope and quality,” Mr Ellwood said.
