Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
BRUNSWICK STREET UPGRADE ON TRACK
Work behind the construction barriers at Brunswick Street Station is on schedule with platforms, escalators and lifts taking shape.
Minister for Transport John Mickel and local Member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace were today treated to a sneak preview of the new-look platforms 3 and 4 as the first section of the hoarding was removed.
Mr Mickel said it was exciting to see how far the project had progressed since construction started in June.
“Since the demolition work was completed a few weeks ago, constructor Bovis Lend Lease has been able to ramp up the construction process,” Mr Mickel said.
“The lift, escalator and stairs are already in place, as well as a fire escape.
“The toilet amenities, platforms supervisor’s office and cleaners’ facilities are also progressing with the structures in place and internal surface finishes are ready to be applied.
“Work is also progressing on the new ceiling with the support steel work completed and covering underway.”
Mr Mickel said once completed, the new station would include a lift, escalator and stairway to each platform, a ceiling throughout the platforms, brighter lighting, enhanced CCTV coverage, new seating and improved directional and customer information signage.
“Work on platforms 3 and 4 is on track to be completed by the end of March 2008 when construction will advance to platforms 1 and 2. The entire project is expected to be completed by December 2008.
“This redevelopment will not only rejuvenate the station and offer better access and improved safety - it will also give the entire Valley precinct a new lease on life as the tired old station is remodelled to suit its surroundings.”
Mrs Grace said QR had worked with Bovis Lend Lease and All Hallows School to commission artwork for the hoarding barriers as part of the QR’s positive pARTnerships projects being rolled out across the Citytrain network.
“This project has given these talented students the opportunity to showcase their outstanding work,” Mrs Grace said.
“The 16 paintings all incorporate QR’s new safety mascot ‘Spike’ and reflect the culture and vibe of the Valley by portraying him in local scenes illustrating important safety messages.
“It’s fantastic that the local community has been given the opportunity to be involved in this project.”
Mrs Grace said she would continue to take a strong interest in the project as it progressed. “I was very impressed with the amount of information and customer service QR was offering to its customers when this project first started and when the platforms were closed in July,” Mrs Grace said.
“It reflects QR’s commitment to customer service while working to improve services and facilities for passengers. “The construction work has inevitably caused some inconvenience to customers, however I understand that detailed plans are in place to minimise the impact to passengers when the work is progressed to the platforms 1 and 2. I am also confident that customers will be prepared well in advance for the temporary adjustment to their new travel arrangements.”
