Whitsundays sailing along with international tourists

International visitors to the Whitsundays plumped up the coffers by an extra $19 million in the year to September 2007, the latest International Visitor Survey (IVS) results show.

Tourism Parliamentary Secretary and Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt said the figures released today showed that overseas tourists to the region spent $126 million, which represented an 18 per cent increase on the previous year.

Ms Jarratt said the Whitsundays welcomed 218,200 international visitors in the year to September 2007 – up by 5 per cent – who spent 1,317,200 international visitor nights in the region.

“Compared with the year to September 2006, the number of international holiday visitors to the Whitsunday region increased by 6 per cent to 212,000,” she said.

“International holiday visitors account for 97 per cent of all international visitors to the region and spent an average of 5.1 nights in the Whitsundays."

“Offering a smorgasbord of activities to cater for any budget, it’s easy to see why the Whitsundays is a popular destination with our overseas tourists.”

International visitors to the region spent an average of six nights.

“For the year ended September 2007, the average spend per night increased by 9 per cent to $95 and the average spend per person (per trip) increased by 13 per cent to $576,” Ms Jarratt said.

“The total increase in expenditure was driven by the fact there have been more visitors who have stayed slightly longer and spent more.”

While the United Kingdom and Germany remained the largest overseas source markets for the Whitsundays, the region enjoyed small increases in visitors from a variety of other European nations.
