Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Work starts on lower landing at Mourilyan jetty

Construction has commenced on the temporary replacement of the lower-level landing and stairs at Mourilyan Harbour jetty, after the previous landing was removed due to safety concerns.

Member for Mulgrave Warren Pitt said the Queensland Government was committed to ensuring the jetty was operationally safe.

Mr Pitt said the contractors, Pacific Marine Group of Townsville, commenced work on the project yesterday, Wednesday December 5, with works to be completed by the end of next week.

“Community safety is of paramount importance, so the landing will be closed until construction is completed,” he said.

Queensland Transport is overseeing the works, which involves a temporary structure fabricated from painted steel sections being erected.

The floor to the landing and stairs will consist of galvanised steel grates, and the landing will be bolted to the existing jetty structure and supported on steel posts driven into the seabed.

A stand alone steel fender pile will be installed near the south-western corner of the temporary landing to provide some protection from vessel impact.

Mr Pitt said the fender pile was not designed for mooring loads, so it was important for community safety that vessels did not tie up to this.

The safety handrails that were recently removed from the jetty deck will be re-attached to the western side of the jetty during the works. The new position will not interfere with access for vehicles of five to seven tonnes.

"This is another example of the Queensland Government’s commitment to providing facilities that meet the needs of the community,” Mr Pitt said.
