Doors to Skilled Park to be thrown open to the public

Sport Minister, Judy Spence, has announced an Open Day will be held at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast, before the NRL season kicks off next year.

Ms Spence said Queenslanders will be able to tour the new $160 Million venue on Sunday February 17.

“This day is about giving every Queenslander the keys to Skilled Park for a day,” Ms Spence said.

“The event will give all members of the public the opportunity to come in and experience the Skilled Park atmosphere for free, get a glimpse of the Titans’ change rooms and sit in the best seats in the house.

“The day will include an official opening ceremony, entertainment, and a Gold Coast Titans training session. It will also provide fans with a chance to familiarise themselves with the venue ahead of match days.

“This will be an event not to be missed and I encourage people to mark this date on the calendar.”

Ms Spence also welcomed the news today that the Gold Coast venue will host one of the opening games of the 2008 season, on March 14 next year.

“I have no doubt Skilled Park will be packed to the rafters, with fans flocking to see the Gold Coast Titans take to the field in an all Queensland derby against the North Queensland Cowboys, on the first weekend of the 2008 NRL season,” Ms Spence said.

“This government is delivering a world-class venue and I have no doubt both the players and fans will be very happy to call Skilled Park home.

“Skilled Park continues to rapidly move towards completion, on time and on budget.

“The turf is down on the field of play and is being prepared for the first match in three months time. The lighting has been tested, the majority of seats are in and the contractors continue to apply the finishing touches.

“When we open the doors to the public on February 17, Queensland will be presented with a first-class venue, set to hold some of the greatest NRL matches of the season.”

Ms Spence said fans will also have a chance to see the Titans in action on March 1, when they take on the West Tigers in a trial match.

“I encourage patrons attending all events at Skilled Park, to catch public transport,” Ms Spence said.

“We are establishing a first-rate transport hub adjacent to the stadium. Trains and buses will travel to and from the venue on event days, with park and ride facilities to be located close to the stadium.”
