Noosa trainees get hospitable welcome into workforce
Seven young Noosa jobseekers will graduate tomorrow from an employment project which has given them work preparation skills and hands-on experience in the hospitality industry.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said these participants are the first group of youth graduates from the Smorgasbord of Skills Opportunities project, delivered by the Noosa Community Training Centre.
“This 55-week project has been made possible by a $135,750 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant, giving 140 unemployed locals the ability to break into hospitality and other in-demand local industries,” Mr Mickel said.
“These graduates have now gained skills in communication, computer operations and
jobsearch techniques, as well as undertaking work experience and accredited training in Certificate I and II in Hospitality Operations.
“This is what the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is about, providing people with the skills to participate meaningfully in the workforce.
“I am pleased that four graduates have attained work in their chosen fields as a result of this project.”
Noosa Community Training Centre Manager Glenda Lane said the participants worked very hard during their training.
“There is a strong emphasis on the practical element of hospitality training in the course and the participants regularly set tables, cooked and served lunch and cleaned-up afterwards.
“Helping prepare cocktails and finger-food for the 350-strong crowd at the opening of the Gympie Film Festival, and then a sit-down dinner the following night has also been part of the hands-on experience.
“As a result of their training, a couple of participants have decided to pursue careers as chefs, when initially they thought only of waiting or bar work,” said Ms Lane.
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
