Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Sunshine Coast multicultural jobseekers emerge work ready
Twelve participants will graduate tomorrow from the Get Set for Work – Ready, Set, Go project run by Gatton Shire Council in partnership with HB Training on behalf of Skill Centred Queensland.
The project received $106,000 of Skilling Queenslanders for Work funding from the Queensland Government to assist disengaged and at-risk youths in the Gatton area.
It was delivered in three stages over 17 weeks, focusing on improving life skills and personal development through to job placement and placement support.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the project has given early school-leavers an alternative and practical avenue into employment, benefiting both participants and the community.
“This Get Set for Work project helps to instil pride and a strong work ethic in young people at risk of disengaging from learning or earning,” Mr Mickel said.
“It is important to address the needs of young people before they become disengaged and put themselves at risk of economic, physical or mental harm.
“Projects like these are designed to foster participants’ potential and lead them in a direction that will help them to achieve their goals.”
Skill Centred Queensland CEO Gerard Crotty said the three step project was run effectively by Gatton Shire Council and he expects to see all participants strive in their future.
“As part of the project, participants established a mock tuckshop to teach them the basics of retail business. This proved to be a worthwhile task, giving participants relevant experience and a good understanding of retail processes,” Mr Crotty said.
“Developing healthy attitudes in the early stages of workforce experience is valuable to ensuring ongoing employment and job security.
“I am delighted this project has been successful, providing commercial and not-for-profit businesses with trained workers across a number of disciplines including management, sales, IT and finance.
“I’m even happier to report the Ready, Set, Go project has seen 10 participants move into the local workforce already.”
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and Queensland’s prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
