Minister inspects Wujal Wujal roadworks

Minister for Main Roads Warren Pitt visited Wujal Wujal today to inspect local roadworks and to meet with local workers.

The visit took in the construction underway on the new bridge over Granite Creek and the works taking place near Bloomfield Causeway.

Mr Pitt said he valued opportunities like this to see work underway to improve the road network for remote communities.

“Main Roads is committed to building and upgrading infrastructure to cater for Queensland’s remote communities,” Mr Pitt said.

“The work underway to construct a 56 metre-long bridge at Granite Creek, 1km north of Wujal Wujal, on Bloomfield Road is a good example of this commitment.

“In the past, school children from Wujal Wujal have missed weeks of school during the wet season because of flooding at the Granite Creek causeway.

“This Queensland Government-funded $2.4 million project will improve flood immunity and safety at this causeway, and is being built in response to requests from the community for a bridge."

The bridge piles are in place and construction of the deck unit is scheduled to start in early December 2007 with completion of the project scheduled before Christmas 2007, weather permitting.

Mr Pitt also visited the roadworks taking place near Bloomfield Causeway with Main Roads District Director Bruce Gould.

“This is another project which will result in real benefits for the local community and road users,” Mr Pitt said.

“Drainage along this 500 metre section of road is being improved and the road is being widened and sealed.

"What it means for the people of Wujal Wujal is improved visibility and safety."

It also means employment opportunities for six members of the community who are receiving on-the-job training in road construction via Main Roads' Remote Communities Services Unit.

The $796,000 project extends on from 600 metres of work completed last year and is also scheduled for completion before Christmas, weather permitting.

During the visit Mr Pitt and the District Director also took the opportunity to present the Bloomfield State School with 12 ex-Main Roads computers.

Bloomfield State School Principal Mr Nathaniel Train gratefully received the first of the computers, which will be used by students at the school.
