The Honourable John Mickel

The State Government is providing over $1.16 million to assist 155 disadvantaged jobseekers in Brisbane, Caboolture and Redcliffe.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said Bridgeworks Employment and Training organised the Pathways to Success project which will provide participants with job preparation and nationally accredited training or paid work placements.

“With unemployment at a 30-year low of 3.8 per cent in Queensland and employers looking for more people with the right skills and experience we need to assist the unemployed and underemployed into the workforce,” Mr Mickel said.

“Through projects like this the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is assisting people to get the skills and experience they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.

“One hundred and five of the jobseekers will be placed in paid work for 13 weeks. They will be coordinated from Caboolture and Chermside. As part of these work placements 20 Indigenous participants will organise a series of Indigenous community-focussed projects involving the Redcliffe Art Gallery, Redcliffe Museum, Redcliffe Cultural Centre, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Radio 99 Seven and others.

“The project will support the Christmas in the Park event in partnership with the Redcliffe Cultural and Arts Centre.

“The job preparation training will be delivered in Chermside, Lutwyche, Caboolture and Mount Gravatt.”

Bridgeworks Employment and Training General Manager Kris McCue said the project aims to assist migrants and refugees, the mature-aged, Indigenous people and parents and carers.

“All of these groups are over-represented in the unemployed population but with the right training and experience they can get into the workforce and start making a positive contribution,” Mr McCue said.

“Completing a work placement or the job preparation training also helps participants maintain their self-confidence and motivation to impress employers through the application process and when they start a new job.”

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
