Pacific Islanders from Logan learn jobskills

A new year-long skilling project is giving 40 Pacific Islanders intensive assistance to help them move into work.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Woodridge Desley Scott said Pan Pacific Oceania had been granted $60,000 to run the Skilling Queenslanders for Work project.

“Employment rates among the Pacific Islander community in Brisbane South still lag behind mainstream levels,” Mr Mickel said.

“Pan Pacific Oceania is ideally placed to help participants address employment barriers as they have a close relationship with the Islander community.”

Ms Scott said the main target group would be parents and carers and young people as these groups are particularly marginalised from the labour market.

“Participants will benefit from training in job searching, workplace communication, Australian work culture, resume writing and addressing selection criteria,” she said.

Pan Pacific Oceania President Samataua Sitagata Hanamenn Hunt said the project fills a gap in the local community.

“There is a need for a flexible, culturally sensitive and outcome focused program delivered by Pacific Islanders for Pacific Islanders,” Mr Hunt said.

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
