Five new partners for Aviation High

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh today welcomed five new industry partners for Australia’s first aviation-focused state high school, Aviation High.

Following with the annual Aerospace Education Awards earlier today, Ms Bligh said she was pleased to announce that QANTAS, CAE, Thales Australia and TAE had joined Virgin Blue Airlines as industry partners to support Aviation High at Clayfield.

“The companies’ involvement will range from helping to develop the school’s cutting-edge aviation curriculum, providing work experience opportunities for students, and teacher professional development and mentoring,” Ms Bligh said.

“The industry partners are also offering support of specialist facilities and marketing services, and awards and rewards for students and teachers.

“Earlier this year, Virgin Blue Airlines signalled its commitment to the new school with its $30,000 Virgin Blue Aviation High Bursary.”

The State’s high achievers in aviation education were honoured at the Aerospace Education Awards ceremony at Parliament House in Brisbane today.

“The Aerospace Project, of which Aviation High is a part, has grown from six high schools in 2004 to 17 Gateway schools and 550 students studying aerospace subjects,” Ms Bligh said.

“Through this project, the State Government is working with industry partners to ensure young people have the skills to take advantage of the exciting and challenging career options in Queensland’s growing aviation and aerospace industries.”

Boeing Australia Limited, Aviation Australia, the Brisbane Airport Corporation, Australian Aerospace and GE Aviation are the Aerospace Project partners along with the Department of Education, Training and the Arts.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education, Training and the Arts, Bonny Barry, presented awards to 24 teachers and students and 24 finalists earlier today.

“These students and teachers are being recognised for their outstanding achievements in academic performance, leadership and innovation in aviation education,” Ms Barry said.

The student winners and finalists share in more than $20,000 in Aerospace Education Awards and Scholarships and the winning teacher receives a study tour, sponsored by Boeing, to the United States.
