NEW ‘GREEN’ QBSA HEADQUARTERS A SIGN OF THE TIMES

The Queensland Building Services Authority’s new head office in South Brisbane is an illustration of the boom times in the building industry and new environmental standards in building design, Housing Minister Robert Schwarten said today.

Mr Schwarten, who officially opened the building today, said the number of licensees on the BSA’s books had grown by 46% since 1994 to more than 68,000.

“When the BSA moved into its previous headquarters in 1994, it was responsible for 46,500 licensees and insured 68,000 new residential building projects,” Mr Schwarten said.

“Today the BSA’s Home Warranty Insurance Scheme covers more than 500,000 building projects with a total value of $52.5 billion.

“It’s a well-known fact that the building and construction industry in our state is booming and this new building will allow the BSA to provide enhanced service to the industry.”

Mr Schwarten said the building had been designed with the environment in mind.

“Not only has this former warehouse been converted into a state-of-the-art office building but, in the process, it has been made as ‘green’ as possible,” he said.

“Features of the building include a solar hot water system, rainwater tanks with a capacity of 100,000 litres, double-glazed windows, energy efficient lighting and roof insulation.”

BSA General Manager Ian Jennings said that over the past five years the organisation had focused on providing better services to its customers.

“As a result the BSA is now recognised throughout Australia as the leading building regulator and provider of consumer protection,” Mr Jennings said.

“To further enhance its service delivery, BSA is undergoing internal change aimed at establishing an organisation which is more flexible and responsive to its customers and the industry.

“Greater emphasis will be placed on new initiatives and strategies to address industry performance.

“The change is about improving business and helping Queenslanders build better.”
