Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Re-engaging young people on Sunshine Coast
Twenty-eight young unemployed people from the Sunshine Coast will receive accredited training and prepare to join the workforce as part of a local assistance project.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative provided $47,590 to Integrated Family and Youth Services to organise the Re-engaging Young People for Employment project.
“The participants will study modules from the Course in Skills for the Future thanks to the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE who are providing $99,792 for the training,” Mr Mickel said.
“While unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.8 per cent in Queensland, we need to remember that there are groups like young people have much higher unemployment rates than the general population.
“The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative funds community organisations to provide disadvantaged jobseekers with the assistance they need to find meaningful work.”
Integrated Family and Youth Service Chief Executive Officer Mark Clissold said the project would develop participants’ life skills and job searching techniques.
“These skills combined with the accredited training will give participants the self-confidence to find a job that suits them and impress the employer with their motivation to start work,” Mr Clissold said.
“The Course in Skills for the Future will also show participants how accredited training can help them launch a career in whatever field they choose, so signing on for further training is another option for them.”
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
