Minister for Child Safety and Minister for Women
The Honourable Margaret Keech

Volunteer reader recognised

A volunteer reader from the Pyjama Foundation has been recognised for her outstanding dedication to children in care.

Child Safety Minister Margaret Keech last night presented the award to Pyjama Foundation volunteer Samantha Campbell in recognition of her efforts to developing the literacy and numeracy skills of children in care.

Samantha Campbell has been reading to children with the Pyjama Foundation for less than three years, but in that time she has read to three different groups of children and helped them to improve their academic results.

In addition to this Samantha and her partner became registered respite carers in June this year and now care for two children every fortnight.

Mrs Keech praised Samantha’s efforts and the work volunteer readers did with children in care.

“All of the Pyjama Angels are heroes,” Mrs Keech said.

“Samantha Campbell’s contributions are a shining example of what can be achieved with passion and conviction.

“As a former teacher, I know the difference that one committed person can make to the confidence and ability of a child who has a desire to learn and improve.

“I thank you for your hard work, your dedication and your kindness in donating your time and energy to this cause, you are an inspiration to us all.”

Pyjama Foundation Director Bronwyn Sheehan also paid tribute to Samantha’s efforts, especially for her work with one particular child.

“This child was in grade seven, but had the reading ability of someone in grade three. Her grades and ability have improved to the point that she is now enrolled in grade eight, “Ms Sheehan said.

“Samantha is the most beautiful person and she is hugely responsible for this child now feeling settled.

“Her behaviour has improved and she’s now happy – it’s almost too good to describe.”
