Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Ready for work in Hervey Bay
A group of 25 young people from Hervey Bay will graduate from a Get Set for Work project tomorrow.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Hervey Bay Andrew McNamara said Glendyne Education and Training organised the project with a $145,500 grant from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
“Young people who drop out of school and don’t move into employment will face a tough time getting a start in the workforce in the future,” Mr Mickel said.
“The Get Set for Work program provides a pathway to employment for young disadvantaged jobseekers who don’t fit in at school and need extra assistance.
“The project includes life skills training, real work experience and mentoring so participants can be confident in their skills and abilities and motivated to find work.”
Queensland Department of Communities provided $36,206 from its Mindfields Program to support this project.
Member for Hervey Bay Andrew McNamara said assisting young people would have long-term benefits for the participants and the wider community.
“Queensland’s booming economy has helped cut the state’s unemployment rate to a 30-year low of 3.8 per cent but 14.4 per cent of young people are still struggling to find work,” Mr McNamara said.
“The reality is that as the workforce ages we are going to need all the people we can get participating in the workforce.
“To achieve that the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative provides funding to community organisations to assist unemployed and underemployed people to develop the skills they need to find and hold meaningful employment.”
Glendyne Education and Training Centre Program Manager Ray Krueger said the course gave participants a choice of courses in different areas.
“They could complete competencies from a Certificate II in Engineering (Metal), Carpentry, Information Technology or Retail Operations,” Mr Krueger said.
“Training in literacy and numeracy or health and sport was also available.
“The project has been a great success with 10 participants returning for further training and another eight finding jobs.”
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
