Resignation of Northern Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has paid tribute to Clare Martin as a stellar figure in Northern Territory politics who led Labor out of the political wilderness in 2001 to end 27 years of Country Liberal Party rule.

“Ms Martin said today that she has enormous pride in what has been achieved by the first Labor Territory government - and so she should,” Ms Bligh said.

“Since her historic election, she has overseen a period of sustained economic development that has led to more Territorians being in work than ever before.

“This is at a time when the NT also has undergone record population growth, so it is a tremendous record.

“Her energy, drive and ideas made Labor electable in the Territory for the first time and her stunning 2005 victory showed that overwhelmingly, Territorians agreed with her vision.

“Ms Martin gave the Territory a strong, positive voice on the national stage .”
