White Ribbon Day – let victims of domestic violence know help is here

Victims of domestic violence don’t have to suffer in silence, says Minister For Women Margaret Keech.

Mrs Keech used White Ribbon Day to remind women that there is a vast array of services available to help anyone suffering abuse by a partner.

“Each year on November 25 the world voices its anger about violence against women and people show their support by wearing a white ribbon,” Mrs Keech said.

“Around eight per cent of Australian women are right now being abused by their partner, and disturbing recent research shows 42 per cent of women have experienced violence by a previous partner.

“It’s quite alarming to consider that at this moment so many women are living with domestic violence.

“I know they are scared, but I want to remind these women that they can speak up, because we can help and they can be protected.”

Services available include supported accommodation, counselling and support, court assistance, information and referral, just call Womensline 1800 811 811.

“White Ribbon day is a crucial event to reach out to the victims of domestic violence," she said.

"It demonstrates to these women that we’re here with numerous options to help, that they can move past this.

“The more white ribbons victims of domestic violence see today, the greater the chance one of them will speak up about their plight, because they’ve realised how many people believe they can, and should ask for help.”

Another important feature of White Ribbon Day is the opportunity it offers perpetrators of violence to seek help, by calling the Mensline on 1800 600 636 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.

“On White Ribbon day we also hope such men may reflect on their actions and find the strength to call and ask for help,” said Mrs Keech.

“Domestic violence affects everyone, and those most traumatised can often be children.

“So let’s tell these victims of domestic violence that we are thinking of them, we can help them believe they have the strength, and that we have the services to end their pain.

"We can tell them all this with a simple white ribbon.”
