Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Diversity matters to Queensland: Minister
Launching the latest edition of free publication Diversity Matters, Multicultural Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr congratulated Queensland-based company CSR Sugar for supporting talented Australian South Sea Islander students.
Ms Nelson-Carr said CSR would provide $30,000 over six years to support an undergraduate scholarships program established by the State Government for descendants of Australian South Sea Islanders.
“Administered through the Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation, the scholarship program has received $150,000 from the State Government, along with private donations to help talented students fulfil their uni dreams,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“I am delighted to see such a Queensland-based company supporting such a valuable community initiative,” she said. “South Sea Islanders have a long history with the Australian sugar industry and it’s wonderful to see CSR acknowledging their involvement and giving back to the community.
“As well, CSR has given 19 computers to South Sea Islander students, from primary school right through to uni.”
In this end-of-year edition of Diversity Matters magazine, CSR Sugar Chief Executive Ian Glasson explains why the company was making a concerted effort to support the scholarships initiative.
“South Sea Islanders played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Australian sugar industry,” Mr Glasson said in the magazine.
Other stories in this edition include a discussion with Queensland’s Multicultural Champion Sigrid Thornton, how Mareeba is exporting multiculturalism to Italy, the opening of the Pagoda in Priestdale and camel races in Tara.
