The Honourable Robert Schwarten
SUSTAINABLE HOME REDLAND OPENS TO THE PUBLIC
The latest demonstration home in the Smart and Sustainable Homes Program officially opens in Redland today.
Minister for Public Works and Housing Robert Schwarten said Sustainable Home Redland had been designed to prove that sustainability is affordable with a design that can be adapted to suit any budget and site conditions.
“Sustainable Home Redland will demonstrate the principles of sustainable housing which allows people to inspect and appreciate these special design features first-hand,” Mr Schwarten said.
“The Smart and Sustainable Homes Program is a unique collaboration between the State Government, local government and industry.
“Homes built as part of the Smart and Sustainable Homes Program use the Department of Public Works “Smart Housing” principles which are based on the triple-bottom-line concept of economic, social and environmental sustainability."
Located at lot 111 Parklink Drive, Redland Bay, in developer Fox and Bell’s Parklands Estate, this Begbie Bentham-designed home will be opened for the public to inspect for the next 12 months.
“It will showcase the considerable comfort and lifestyle benefits, as well as the long-term financial savings that can be achieved through smart, climate-sensitive design,” Mr Schwarten said.
The home features passive solar design and natural comfort. This includes WELS rated fixtures and toilets, two rainwater tanks plus a rainwater bladder located under the front deck for drinking water and irrigation, a compost bin, five-star energy rating, low energy lighting and open plan living spaces.
Materials such as low toxicity paint, low impact flooring systems and eco-friendly cladding have been used to minimise health and safety impacts.
The Redland home has been built with accessibility and liveability in mind, while using housing design concepts suitable for the Redland Shire, including a well considered passive design approach.
Builders Begbie Bentham will sell Sustainable Home Redland after the display period finishes.
