Minister for Natural Resources and Water and Minister Assisting the Premier in North Queensland
The Honourable Craig Wallace
MT NINDERRY CREEKS TO BE NAMED AFTER PIONEER FARMERS
Two creeks in the Mt Ninderry area at Yandina may be officially named after pioneering farmers under a proposal by a local resident.
Minister for Natural Resources and Water Craig Wallace has called for public submissions on the proposal to officially name Thorogood and Galt creeks.
The department administers the Place Names Act 1994, which controls the official naming of localities, suburbs and geographical features within local government areas.
Mr Wallace said departmental records indicated that the geographical features had not been recognised in accordance with the Act.
“The proposed name, ‘Thorogood Creek’ originates from the Thorogoods, a pioneering farming family who once owned most of the property where the watercourse flows,” Mr Wallace said.
“The Thorogoods were active in the community, donating portions of their property for the community hall and tennis courts.”
The Galt Creek name proposal acknowledges the Galt family, which once owned most of the property where the watercourse flows, as well as a 260 hectare property known as Yandina Station.
Thorogood and Galt Creeks are both well-defined watercourses, about two kilometres long, with headwaters in the steep slopes of the Ninderry Range. They are located about four kilometres east of Yandina.
A plan illustrating the proposal is available for public inspection at the NRW office, ground floor, Centenary Building, Currie Street, Nambour, Maroochy Shire Council, Eddie De Vere Building, corner of Currie and Bury streets, Nambour, the Nambour Library and at the Yandina Post Office.
Individual written submissions can be sent to the Regional Service Director, South East Region, Nambour Office, Department of Natural Resources and Water, PO Box 573, Nambour Qld 4560 until 25 January 2008.
