The Honourable Anna Bligh
Premier Bligh Named #1 Ticket Holder For New-Look Queensland Firebirds
Premier Anna Bligh was named number one ticket holder of the Queensland Firebirds today at the official unveiling of their new look, new logo and new home venue.
Ms Bligh said she was proud to accept the number one ticket for the number one netball team in the State.
“Netball is a great Queensland game, with over 37,000 playing the game across the State and hundreds more involved through coaching, umpiring, clubs and competitions,” Ms Bligh said.
“I know Netball Queensland works hard to get young Queenslanders involved in the game through initiatives like its Vicki Wilson Cup, the school-based competition that develops skills and opportunities for girls to learn and grow as netballers.
“This is a great way for young Queensland women to get involved in competitive sport from an early age, making it far more likely they will go on to live an active, healthy lifestyle as adults.”
Ms Bligh said the Firebirds were Queensland’s top netball team and she was proud to be their number one ticket holder in 2008.
“The 2008 season is an exciting time for the Firebirds. They will compete in the ANZ Championship, a new competition that will see teams from Australia and NZ competing in a semi-professional netball league for the first time.
“The girls will be dressed to impress in their new uniforms with new colours and logo, and their new home - the world-class Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre – will bring the game to the city heart.
“I urge Queenslanders to get behind their team next year and cheer loud and proud for the Firebirds,” she said.
Ms Bligh said the Firebirds’ first home game will be played against Perth on Sunday, 6 April 2008.
