The Honourable Desley Boyle
ASIA: Queensland is poised to receive an influx of northern Asian visitors with the arrival of China Eastern Airlines into Brisbane today.
Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle, who is on a trade mission in Asia this week to woo more airlines to Queensland, said China Eastern would operate two flights per week between Shanghai and Brisbane from today (November 22) until February 20 next year.
“The Queensland Government has been working hard over the past few years to secure regular scheduled services from China, holding numerous discussions with China Eastern and other Chinese airlines,” Ms Boyle said.
“China Eastern Airlines has committed to Brisbane for the northern winter period – they want to test the market and gauge the level of support for the Queensland services.
“This will provide about 570 inbound seats per week, which is good news for Queensland.”
Ms Boyle said the move followed seven charter flights by China Eastern Airlines into Brisbane from Shanghai during March 2007.
“The 2007 flights provided an estimated 1834 inbound seats from China to Queensland over the month,” Ms Boyle said.
She said visitors to Queensland from China had increased by 15 per cent to reach 143,800 in the year to June 2007.
“Chinese visitors now account for 7 per cent of all international visitors to Queensland, having grown by an average of 16 per cent a year over the past five years.
“The Queensland Government will continue working to secure a long-term commitment to Brisbane and Queensland from China Eastern.”
The flights will be triangulated with Melbourne with services in November and December running Shanghai-Melbourne-Brisbane-Shanghai and in January and February between Shanghai-Brisbane-Melbourne-Shanghai – arriving in Brisbane in the early morning.
