Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Nelson-Carr opens $1.7 million Bohlevale Community Centre
Residents of Thuringowa’s northern suburbs now have better access to a range of community and support services thanks to a Queensland Government funded $1.7 million purpose-built community centre.
Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today officially opened the new Bohlevale District Community Centre next to the Woodland Shopping Centre on the Bruce Highway at Deeragun.
“Unprecedented development and residential growth in the northern suburbs meant the former community centre facility in Veales Road was no longer deemed suitable to adequately serve the local population.
“This new, larger centre is in a much more accessible hub-type location and importantly, is tailored to meet the specific needs of residents in the area that it serves,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Services offered include playgroups, community education and information sessions, senior’s excursions and organised recreational activities such as tai chi and line dancing.
“Regular outreach in Townsville and Thuringowa including crisis counselling and referral, emergency relief funding and health services are other vital aspects of the centre’s operational agenda.
“But really, the roomy, attractive new centre is above all a place where community members can come together in a common meeting place to share their interests, make new acquaintances and receive support they might need.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said the Department of Communities provides triennial funding of more than $80,000 a year to enable the Bohlevale Community Centre to deliver essential services to local residents.
“I encourage everyone who lives in the area and who hasn’t been to the new centre to go along, meet the staff and get a first-hand experience of how they can make the most of this excellent community facility.”
