Queensland company to train Air Asia engineers

KUALA LUMPUR: Asia’s largest airline, Air Asia of Malaysia, has enlisted Brisbane-based Aviation Australia to train its aircraft maintenance engineers.

Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle announced the deal while in Malaysia on a trade mission.

“This is further proof of Queensland’s growing standing as an aviation hub and confirms our reputation for delivering quality aviation services,” Ms Boyle said.

Aviation Australia today signed an MOU with Air Asia over the training deal. The Queensland company began a 16-week conversion and training program on site in Kuala Lumpur this month and will deliver further training there next year.

“Aviation Australia is training 24 experienced aircraft engineers to enable them to complete the theory requirements of an EASA Part 66 B1.1 Turbine Aeroplane licence.

“This is a major coup for Aviation Australia and shows the Queensland Government’s commitment to aviation is producing results.

“Aviation Australia was established in 2001 by the Queensland Government with the cooperation of the major airlines, aerospace companies and universities.

“It’s the only non European organisation to hold EASA Part 147 approval to deliver the full suite of basic aircraft engineering qualifications which is the platform the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority used to model its new licensing structure against,” Ms Boyle said.

In addition to the training deal, Air Asia X signed an MOU with Tourism Queensland over joint marketing activities to promote the airline’s new direct flights to the Gold Coast.

“Both agreements further cements ties between Malaysia and Queensland,” Ms Boyle said.

“Earlier this month Air Asia X commenced direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to the Gold Coast.

“This is an important new partnership between the Gold Coast, Queensland and Air Asia X.

“AirAsia X’s new flights will bring an extra 65,000 long-haul passengers to the Queensland every year.

“It’s very promising that over 20,000 seats have already been sold.

“Air Asia X not only provides a new link to the Gold Coast directly from Malaysia, but there is also an opportunity for Kuala Lumpur to act as a transit point, bringing visitors from further a field to Queensland.

“The Gold Coast’s hotels, restaurants, attractions, tour operators and retailers are excited by the prospect of new tourists.

“My congratulations to Asia Air X for an excellent decision in choosing the Gold Coast and Queensland,” Ms Boyle said.
