Councils urged to apply for landfill testing funds

Councils have been invited to apply for grants from an $800,000 Queensland Government program that provides funds to test whether landfill sites pose any threats to the surrounding environment and residential areas.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt today called for applications for the ninth and final round of funding under the State Government’s Landfill Remediation Assessment Program (LRAP).

“The LRAP is designed to help councils identify the risks associated with closed landfill sites and assess the potential costs of any remedial works that may be necessary,” Mr Pitt said.

“Councils have a key role to play in ensuring their landfill sites do not have an adverse impact on the surrounding environment and that our state’s unique natural assets are protected for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Mr Pitt said 62 councils had applied for funding under LRAP so far and 255 landfill sites had been investigated around Queensland.

“Under LRAP, councils can access subsidies of up to 50 per cent of the costs of investigating the safety of landfill sites,” he said.

“Applications for LRAP grants close on 11 January 2008, so I urge all councils to get to work on their submissions.

“This is the final round of funding before the program is merged with the Environmental Infrastructure Program in July 2008.

“Studies carried out under LRAP will carry a lot of weight when councils seek funds under the new program, so it is in councils’ own interests to apply for this funding.”
