A State Government grant of $450,000 is assisting 175 unemployed people in Toowoomba to improve their chances of finding work.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine said the Life and Career Centre is organising the Sure Foundations for Toowoomba Jobseekers project.

“This project has been funded through the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative and offers job preparation workshops, accredited training and 16 week paid work placements,” Mr Mickel said.

“The project is helping unemployed and underemployed people to get the skills they need to take that next step.”

Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine said the project was a great way for migrants and refugees, the mature-aged and parents and carers to update and develop their skills.

“Queensland’s booming economy has helped cut the state’s unemployment rate to a 30-year low of 3.8 per cent.

“The reality is that as the workforce ages we are going to need all the people we can get participating in the workforce.

“The key to that is to help people build the skills needed by employers and industry.”

Life and Career Centre CEO Garry Hansford said the project offers accredited training in areas like information technology, business administration, aged care and construction.

“Through this project we can offer different people different kinds of assistance which will open more doors into the workforce for them,” Mr Hansford said.

The Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE is supporting the project with a $105,060 direct grant to help fund the accredited training.

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
