Minister for Natural Resources and Water and Minister Assisting the Premier in North Queensland
The Honourable Craig Wallace
Emirates Airlines today announced a non-stop daily service from the United Arab Emirates to Brisbane, doubling the airline’s flights to Queensland.
Acting Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Craig Wallace said the move by one of the world’s largest airlines to operate an additional daily service direct from Dubai to Brisbane from October 2008 was a true indication of the strength of the state’s tourism and trade industries.
“Currently we receive a daily Emirates flight into Brisbane via Singapore which brings around 2,600 people to Queensland per week,” Mr Wallace said.
“This new commitment by Emirates will result in an additional daily flight, increasing weekly seats to Queensland by more than 1,800.
“It also provides non-stop travel from Dubai to Brisbane which opens up one stop travel from our major markets in the UK and continental Europe via Dubai to Brisbane.
“Emirates have also committed to upgrading the aircraft flying the existing services.
“This is a major coup for Queensland and reinforces the state’s position as Australia’s leading tourism destination.
“Each year more than 2.2 million international tourists spend in excess of $3.6 billion in Queensland.
“I congratulate Emirates for making a solid commitment to driving tourism between our two regions.”
Mr Wallace also congratulated Invest Queensland for its efforts in working alongside Tourism Queensland and the Brisbane Airport Corporation to attract the extra flights between Dubai and Brisbane.
“The United Arab Emirates has one of the highest per capita incomes in the Middle East and has been experiencing extremely rapid growth,” Mr Wallace said.
“The relationship between Queensland and the UAE has really taken off in recent years and there is a high level of trade and investment activity that the extra daily service will further boost.
“In 2005-2006, two way trade between the UAE and Queensland was valued at over $170 million and there are some significant projects in the pipeline.
“For the past five years the Queensland Government has supported Queensland companies to participate in the BIG5 Construction Trade Show in Dubai, the biggest construction/infrastructure trade show in the Middle East.
“There is currently in excess of US$1 trillion worth of construction and infrastructure projects underway in the Gulf countries which include the UAE.
“A non-stop service from Brisbane to Dubai will also allow Queensland businesses easier access to the Middle East without having to travel either via Sydney or Singapore.
“The decision by Emirates to double its daily service between Brisbane and Dubai will be good news to businesses at either end of the route.”
