Aerial food supplies for Aurukun despite cyclone easing
The Queensland Government has approved three plane-loads of food to fly to Aurukun today despite the easing of Tropical Cyclone Guba overnight.
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said he had approved the shipment of almost three tonnes of essential foodstuffs for Aurukun.
The eight pallet shipment, including 1900 kilograms of fruit and vegetables, 700 kilograms of bread and 300 kilograms of meat, will fly out from Cairns this morning.
“A combination of circumstances means that urgent resupply to the community is necessary,” Mr Roberts said.
"The early start to the wet season and high seas over the past week associated with the Tropical Cyclone means it is not possible to transport supplies to Aurukun by road or sea.”
"Three aircraft will transport supplies to Aurukun today."
"It's anticipated that Aurukun may be cut-off for at least another two weeks.”
Member for Cook Jason O'Brien said the food supplies were essential for the Aurukun community, and he welcomed the delivery of the food today.
The food supplies for Aurukun are being administered by the Department of Emergency Services' Emergency Management Queensland through the State Disaster Management Group.
