Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Yorke Island SES Volunteer takes top honours
Yorke Island State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer Daniel Mosby has been named the Far Northern Region's SES Member fo the Year.
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts, who was represented at Friday night's awards ceremony by Member for Barron River Stephen Wettenhall, said Daniel stood out in an impressive field of nominees for his dedication to the SES and his community.
“Daniel has been an SES volunteer for 12 years and has been instrumental in developing the Yorke Island Unit into a strong response agency,” Mr Roberts said.
“His outstanding service and enthusiasm to promote SES values in his community makes him a deserving winner of the region’s SES Member of the Year award.”
SES and Emergency Management Queensland Regional Director Wayne Coutts said Daniel co-ordinated regular education sessions to improve the community’s ability to respond to emergencies.
“Daniel was invited to speak at the launch of the National Emergency Management Strategy for Remote Indigenous Communities Keep Our Mob Safe. He delivered a presentation on how the Yorke Island Unit was improving disaster resilience in the community,” Mr Coutts said.
“He also led the Yorke Island Unit at this year’s Far Northern Regional Rescue Competition, the only team from the Torres Strait to compete.”
Mr Coutts said the Yorke and Poruma units were also recognised at the event, with the York Unit being named the region’s Unit of the Year, and Poruma Unit taking the award for the Operational Response of the Year.
“Yorke Island SES was awarded Unit of the Year for its regular involvement in searches for missing boats and response to marine accidents in Far North Queensland,” Mr Coutts said.
“Poruma Island SES conducted an 80km night time search and rescue effort for occupants of a boat stranded in the Torres Strait.”
Winners of the regional awards have been nominated for SES Week State awards, which will be presented at a ceremony in Brisbane on Sunday 19 November.
