Acting Arts Minister Margaret Keech has congratulated The Queensland Orchestra for winning one of the nation’s most prestigious music awards, the 2007 ABC Limelight Award for Best Orchestral Performance.
The Limelight Awards, as named by ABC Limelight Magazine, recognise the achievements of local and international musicians and their contribution to Australian culture in 2007.
“The Limelight Award, presented for the Piers Lane Plays Beethoven concert at QPAC on 4 May conducted by Pietari Inkinen, confirms the Orchestra’s standing as one of Australia’s best,” Ms Keech said.
“This award is especially significant as it is selected by popular vote, following nominations by ABC presenters and reviewers in coordination with the Limelight Magazine editorial team.
“In the past year, The Queensland Orchestra has generated remarkable success, both at the box office and in winning praise from its audiences.
“Annual ticket sales have passed the $3 million mark for the first time ever, with a number of concerts and events still to take place in 2007.
“Next year also promises to be a landmark season for The Queensland Orchestra with new Chief Conductor Maestro Johannes Fritzsch on board.”
In 2008, The Queensland Orchestra will delight audiences with classical concerts, educational activities, community events and a regional touring program to Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and the Sunshine and Gold Coasts.
Ms Keech said the State Government was a proud supporter of The Queensland Orchestra, contributing $2.2 million annually, as part of a funding package with the Commonwealth.
“The Orchestra is important not only culturally but also economically, as it’s the single largest employer of classical musicians in Queensland,” she said.
The Limelight Award for Best Orchestral Performance Award was open to any Australian orchestra for a live single concert performance in 2007.
