Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine has assured Rockhampton residents that the banned Bindeez beads are not being sold in the area despite a catalogue from a major retail chain suggesting they were on sale.

“I was informed today by the Member for Fitzroy Jim Pearce that a major retailer has circulated a catalogue in the Rockhampton area advertising Bindeez Beads for sale,” Mr Shine said.

“The Office of Fair Trading today inspected the shop involved and made contact with the national office of the retail chain.

“The retailer has confirmed that this catalogue was printed and distribution put in place before I ordered an interim ban on the sale of Bindeez Beads on 6 November 2007.”

Mr Shine said the retailer also confirmed that the ban is being complied with and the goods are not on sale in any of its outlets.

“The retailer removed the goods from sale and checked its shelves on the day the ban was imposed. It also blocked its cash registers from processing any sale of the goods.”

“The chain has placed all stock in secured quarantine and it has posted notifications for customers on its website and at every store,” Mr Shine said.

An inspection this morning by a Fair Trading officer based in Rockhampton has confirmed that the goods are not being sold.

Mr Shine said while there may be other catalogues out in the marketplace showing the beads on sale, there is no indication that any shops are now selling them.

“The Office of Fair Trading worked with retailers to remove the beads from sale immediately they were banned and checks revealed that retailers moved quickly to remove them from sale.”

“I urge anyone who becomes aware of Bindeez beads being sold to contact the Office of Fair Trading on 131 304.

“There are severe penalties in place for anyone caught selling a banned product with a maximum fine of $40,500 for individuals and $202,500 for corporations.

“Given investigations have revealed that the beads contained the toxic substance since production began, I take this opportunity to encourage parents to take them away from their children and either throw them away or return them to the distributor.”
