Major expansion works and record tonnage figures have marked a busy year for the Central Queensland Ports Authority.

Transport Minister John Mickel said the ports of Gladstone and Port Alma, south of Rockhampton, were significant contributors to the regional economy.

Mr Mickel today tabled the Central Queensland Ports Authority's annual report in Queensland Parliament.

"The Port of Gladstone's total cargo movements increased 10.4% to reach a record 74.2 million tonnes, while Port Alma's increased by 20.5% to reach 166,822 tonnes," he said.

"The Port of Gladstone also achieved record coal exports of 51.5 million tonnes, accounting for 69% of its total imports and exports."

Mr Mickel said the ports authority was planning well ahead to provide the facilities needed as the mining boom continues.

"The Central Queensland Ports Authority is continuing with its largest ever capital works program at the RG Tanna Coal Terminal, which will ultimately increase its coal export capacity by 29 million tonnes per annum," he said.

Upgrades at the nearby Barney Point Coal Terminal have been completed, providing greater flexibility and allowing for more cargo movement.

"As well, the authority has progressed with its business case for the proposed Wiggins Island Coal Terminal," Mr Mickel said.

"And an Environmental Impact Study has been approved for an additional six wharves at Fisherman's Landing, which will service future industries."
