Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Robust regional economic conditions, including a strong local property market and increased tourism, underpinned strong results for the Cairns Port Authority last financial year.

Transport Minister John Mickel said both the airport and seaport had made the most of the positive economic environment.

"Passenger movements through the Cairns airport's domestic terminal increased by 6.4% to 2.89 million passengers in 2006-07," he said.

"This trend is likely to continue as new aircraft and airlines come into the market over the next two years."

Mr Mickel tabled the port authority's annual report in Queensland Parliament today.

The Cairns Seaport experienced increased demand from the marine tourism and leisure sectors and its Cityport business was continuing to grow.

"Cairns experienced one of its strongest international cruise seasons in 2006-07 with 35 vessels visiting the port," he said.

"At the same time, the 16-hectare Cityport waterfront urban renewal development has progressed significantly with the completion of the first major property development, Harbour Lights.

"To support the growing cruise market, the Cityport South plan will include the redevelopment of one of the heritage-listed wharf sheds as a dedicated international cruise liner terminal," he said.
