The Honourable John Mickel

A surge in the sugar industry has sweetened trade figures for the Port of Bundaberg, which recorded a dramatic rise in activity last financial year.

Transport Minister John Mickel said the port had put in a strong performance, with a total tonnage of 473,041 tonnes – up 14 per cent on the previous year.

"Bundaberg weathered the impact of a poor year for sugar in 2005-06, but bounced back in 2006-07 with an export of 420,205 tonnes of sugar, a 10.8 per cent increase on the year before," Mr Mickel said.

"Close to 30 per cent of that sugar was destined for overseas markets.

"In addition, molasses imports were nearly 79 per cent higher than the previous year with a total of 52,836 tonnes, and it is expected that molasses imports will continue to increase."

Mr Mickel today tabled the port authority’s 2006-07 annual report in Queensland Parliament. The authority merged with the Port of Brisbane Corporation on October 1, and is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Port of Brisbane continuing to trade under its own name.

"This is an exciting new chapter for Bundaberg with the backing of the expertise, the staff and the $1.2 billion in net assets of the Port of Brisbane Corporation."

Fast facts from the Bundaberg Port Authority's annual report:

• 26 cargo ships and one cruise ship visited the Port of Bundaberg during the year

• total tonnage was 473,041 tonnes

• 420,205 tonnes of sugar were exported – five ships were destined for overseas ports, and 16 ships travelled within Australia.
