Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Less than two weeks to apply for $218,000 Community Benefits Program
Community groups in the Nebo, Mackay, Duaringa and Broadsound Shire areas have just under two weeks to apply for funding from Powerlink’s $218,000 Community Benefits Program.
Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said the Community Benefits Program was associated with several new transmission line projects in the Bowen Basin.
“The project includes new powerlines between Broadsound and Nebo, Nebo and the Pioneer Valley, Nebo and Queensland Rail’s Mindi Substation, and Lilyvale and Blackwater,” Mr Wilson said.
“Powerlink’s Community Benefits Program aims to provide tangible and lasting benefits to local communities in close proximity to new transmission line projects.
“In the past, Powerlink’s Community Benefits Program has funded many worthwhile community projects across Queensland, including books for a community lending library, furniture for an emergency respite house, and interior painting for a hall.”
Member for Fitzroy Jim Pearce said the new transmission line projects were essential infrastructure to ensure future high-voltage electricity supply and underpin the region’s economic growth.
“Through the Community Benefits Program, Powerlink aims to make a positive contribution to improve services, facilities, or environmental outcomes in close vicinity to these transmission lines,” Mr Pearce said.
Funding provided for the CBP is in addition to the compensation paid to landowners directly affected by the transmission line project, and is allocated to selected community projects that can demonstrate broad community support.
Mr Pearce said applications for funding would close on Friday 23 November 2007.
“I encourage interested organisations to apply for funding under this worthwhile program,” he said.
